Scale wise and concept wise landscape architectural solutions are unique from each otherTAKEN FROM THE COMMON ISSUES IN LAND PLOTS OF SRI LANKAN CONTEXT
S o many incidents happen because of the lack of concern of residents regarding the conditions of the LANDSCAPE which finally leads to socially conflictive conditions and environmental degradation also affecting the lives of fauna since the personal land plot is the unit that describe the performance of the macro landscape
Let’s take a typical example from a hill zone from a hill slope human settlement;WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE LAND IF THEY DIDN’T CONTROL WHAT IS CONTROLLABLE ?
What could be the change with Landscape Architecture?
• Building houses so close to the wall bund.
• Less maintenance of the gutters or no gutters at all, so the rain water which flows from the roof directly hits the soil bund directly causing more erosion.
• Digging up the lower part of the soil bund and making it steeper for personal needs causing more and more erosion of the upper soil layers.
• Removal of fauna like the bamboo bushes that naturally retained the soil bunds.
• Those bamboo bushes also provided space for bandicoots and iguanas and their dietary activities, so the other bunds Where there were no bamboo bushes were less affected by the digging ups of the holes by those species. These bushes also provided bamboo which we used to make Vesak lanterns.
Landscape architectural solutions for the above mentioned example may vary with the conceptual approaches to the overall design but the final design solves, considered primary and secondary problems creatively.
Considering the user responsiveness and the quality of life with the environmental responsiveness, the designs perform in different dimensions on different aspects. Even a single structural approach can generate more positive, complex interactions sociologically and biologically.
As an example, a common apathy of a hill slope settlement arguing over the constant erosions which are generated with the weather and manmade conditions with the lack of consciousness of the landscape systems, structures and patterns can be solutionised with creative approaches of the landscape architect. The solutions are not just mere solutions only to overcome the primary solutions of erosion. As a generalist a landscape architect addresses the all the aspects within that particular structural approach not just looking at it in a typical human centered point of view. Yes the designs are for humans. But not only for humans. As well as increasing the quality of the environmental aesthetics for enhanced user experiences within their day today activities, the negative effects over faunal performance should be avoided or minimally affected or if a particular type of such performance leads to problematic situations within the area, it is also being solutionised in a creative way. Let’s take a design element like a green corridor that connects those personal land plots in the area; scale wise the corridors might change with the allowed fauna species’ performances. Within that green corridor; various microclimatic conditions and space variations are being provided automatically and those spaces can be designed for intended perceptions.
Landscape architectural applications do always formulate the intended effects or outcomes of the interior design. Even with the current trends most of the interiors are designed considering proper visual and non-visual connections with nature, the landscape. While generating different types of psychological satisfactions which goes with the mental health of a busy human being, the user; a landscape also provides the structural protections and suitable microclimatic conditions that affects the livability of the housing structure. As an example let’s take a study area of a house structure; properly ventilated and lighted with suitable dynamic and diffuse light conditions and also well connected with pleasing landscape sceneries; it helps emotional regulations and improves memory functions (Kplan, Berman, Jonides, 2008) which is the intended outcome of the design space. Thus to feel more connected and co-existing with nature, the landscape architecture digs into the ways of how we can change the physical settings of where we live in and solutionise the problems
Space is a collection of various elements. They might be tangible or intangible, built or natural. A site is a combination of a unique flora and fauna, soil, social culture and structure, user, water conditions, natural systems, and also spaces are diverse in geologically.
For a successful and sustainable design, the designer must consider above mentioned aspects. The lifespan of any design will depend on those aspects. And here the LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE coming with a proper manner and playing as a major responsive practice.WHAT ARE THE FAILURES CAN APPEAR IN A DESIGN SPACE ?
• Wall cracking
• Animal attacks
• Less comfort
• Lack of recreational spaces
• Natural hazards
• High maintenance cost
• Storm water and waste discharging
• Location (geological gestures)
• Orientation (sun path, ventilation)
• Area authority guidelines
• Design purpose
• System (drainage, lighting)
• Space arrangement (flora, fauna, materials, elements, colors, patterns)
“Landscape Architecture is a discipline exercised relating to all outdoor space requiring landscape architects to work with professionals in such diverse disciplines as forestry, agriculture, geo-technology, environment, urban design, architecture, transport, hospitality, water resources & and irrigation, horticulture, social sciences and a host of others, not least in assisting with advice on landscape policy.”
WHY LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE IS IMPORTANT
Specially landscape architectural applications providing solutions for spaces which having existing or predicted threats. Also adding value to the space quality by appearance, techniques, elements, controlling patterns of movements… etc.TO SOCIETY and CULTURE
Landscape architectural intervention for space or a design can conserve the particular site or completely change or rotate the exact meaning of the site. The landscape architecture is a profession that can highly affect to the society and culture of an area with the designs and solutions. Specially landscape architecture dealing with conservation that can conserve social and cultural facts and values in heritage sites.TO HUMAN BEINGS
Physical health and good mentality also can identify as essential needs for human being. Specially with current developing world lifestyles. The natural colors specially green and blue giving comfortable feeling to the mind. Anthropometrics and ergonomics highly dealing with landscape designs to give more comfortable, meaningful and durable output as a landscape design.LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE LINKING WITH,

GIVING SOLUTIONS FOR SUFFERING CONDITIONS`
RED RIBBON PROJECT - 2007
Red Ribbon ParkThis is another fine example that defines the positioning of landscape architecture within the realm of professions. The Red Ribbon, Tanghe River Park, Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province, Chaina; was designed by “Turenscape design studio” including Landscape Architect Kongjian Yu and Cao Yang which was previously a rotting landscape with a neglected community garbage dump.
The slums were deserted with irrigation facilities and other needs. It’s a poor neighbourhood. The inhabitants of the area weren’t able to keep a proper connection with the outer city even to maintain their daily income levels that can quench the hunger and also the river waters were largely polluted with the disposal of toxic contaminants from the garbage dump. For these the proposed solution was the Red Ribbon Park.
With the provided facilities the benefits for the local communities were generated so that the livability was revitalized ultimately.
The plan was to preserve the natural existence as much as possible promoting the inherent natural biodiversity. The idea of the red ribbon steel structure was to provide access for fishing, jogging, cycling, relaxing and swimming with minimal interventions to the existence. And there is also a more unique idea behind this masterpiece; Knowledge sharing of the community was also another aspect related to higher purpose; aftermath of the world war needed lots of knowledge sharing between older and younger generations and also this ultimately provided the chance for the poor locals of the area to grow themselves economically with the identified opportunities.
MAKE SPACE COMFORTABLE AND LIVE
Imagine Manhattan, in New York City without central park. A huge positive blow to change the progressive urbanity into a sustainable one. The commencement of the project starting from landscape architectural conceptualizations has led to gigantic change of the entire urban landscape supported by the positive behavioral changes of the users. Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as the chief Landscape Architects has designed this marvel landscape with their explorations related to European urban parks and with the huge influence of Andrew Jackson Downing (horticulturist). And the commencements were done just after the completion of the first British park built at the public expense which is Birkenhead Park which Olmsted was previously evolved in.
The concept of the tank, the dageba, the village and the temple of the past brings joy to our minds, but we are not left with the space to remain the same in the present and future social complexities. But we who love the tank, we must turn to the concept of taking a break or getting closer to the tank. That is why we need to explore a new concept that has been incorporated into the tank in anticipation of the tourism industry to protect the tank.
